The Bardo Museum, located in the Bardo suburb of Tunis, has one of the finest mosaic collections in the world. The majority of the mosaics housed within the museum date to the late Roman and early Byzantine periods (2nd-5th centuries AD). As can be seen above, the floor mosaics often show scenes from Classical mythology, featuring figures such as the god Neptune. Also, there are interesting historical scenes of Roman villas, hunting and the occasional portrait, such as the one of the ancient writer Virgil, on the bottom left. |
