Carthage - was the historic capital of what is now Tunisia during ancient times. The city was abandoned after the Arab conquest, when the city of Tunis was constructed. Since then, the city has grown into a pleasant suburb near the capital. As well, since the French era, Carthage has been an important center for archaeology and art history, with many mosaics being found here. Most mosaics date to either the Imperial Roman or Byzantine periods. |
