Malta -

Malta is the name of the largest island in the Maltese Islands, a small
group of islands in the central Mediterranean, south of Sicily.
Collectively, these islands form a country also known as Malta.

The word Malta is derived from the Latin name for the island, Melite,
which probably is derived from the Phoenician word
melita, a place of
refuge, literally "he escaped."
